The following errata apply only to the first printing of the book unless otherwise stated. To determine whether your copy is from the first printing, go to the copyright page and look at the line beginning "10 9 8..." near the bottom of the page. If the last number in that line is 1, your copy is from the first printing.

Page 27, second bulleted item, line 1: "subunits" should read "sugar residues."

Page 45, Fig. 3.4 legend: The last two sentences in the legend should have been deleted, since there are no scale bars in the figure.

Page 64, line 8: "do reveal" should read "do not reveal."

Page 85, Fig. 6.2A: The labels NADH and NAD+ should be reversed.

Page 87: The second chemical reaction should read "1,3-bisphosphoglycerate + ADP → 3-phosphoglycerate + ATP."

Page 88, Fig. 6.3: The labels 2 ATP and 2 ADP should be reversed.

Page 94, Table 6.4, second entry in right column: "Nitrate-oxidizing" should read "Nitrite-oxidizing."

Page 95, Table 6.6, right column: "Cromatium" should read "Chromatium."

Page 97, Fig. 6.9A and legend thereto: "Green bacteria" should read "green sulfur bacteria." In line 4 of the figure legend, "RCI+" should read "RCI*."

Page 108, Fig. 6.16: In panel B, the arrow from 2-oxoglutarate to succinyl coenzyme A should be absent. In panel C, the direction of the arrow between pyruvate and phosphoenolpyruvate should be reversed. The corrected figure can be seen here.

Page 118, next-to-last line: "+7" should read "+5."

Page 142, line 1 of second full paragraph: "nearly 50" should read "many."

Page 144, lines 2-3 of second full paragraph: "codon initiating translation" should read "transcriptional initiation."

Page 144, Fig. 8.10 legend, line 3: "numbers printed in red beneath" should read "numbers printed beneath." Note: this erratum also applies to the second printing.

Page 152, lines 4-5: The clause that begins "fMet" should read "fMet is attached to a tRNA that reads GUG and UUG codons as well as the more common methionine (AUG) codon."

Page 159, lines 3-5 of second full paragraph: The sentence should read "This property by itself is sufficient for some proteins to become incorporated into the cell membrane (though some need the help of other proteins)."

Page 161, Fig. 8.19A: The label "Hydrophobic channel" should read "Hydrophilic channel."

Page 186, Fig. 10.1 legend: In the fifth-from-last line, "merozygote" should read "partial diploid."

Page 342, line 2 of first full paragraph: "lysogens" should read "lysogenic."

Page 345: In lines 6-7 of the paragraph headed "What causes viral induction?," "see Chapter 13" should read "see Chapter 9." In lines 8-9 of the same paragraph, the sentence "Activated RecA protein cleaves the lambda repressor, allowing phage genes to be expressed" should read "The lambda repressor can self-cleave, allowing phage genes to be expressed. This cleavage is facilitated by RecA."
